Proton Therapy in Illinois
Nearly 11,000 cancer patients throughout the state could benefit from proton therapy – almost 7,000 in the Chicago metropolitan area alone. While some 250,000 patients nationwide could benefit from this advanced radiation therapy, only about 6,000 treatment slots are potentially available each year at the five centers currently operating, which means tens of thousands of cancer patients who could benefit from proton therapy have no chance of being treated.
On Sept. 17, 2008, the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board (IHFPB) voted unanimously (4-0) to approve a Certificate of Need (CON) request to develop the Proton Therapy Center of Central DuPage Hospital, a state-of-the- art proton treatment center that is expected to be open to treat patients in early 2011.
The center is being built through a partnership involving Central DuPage Hospital, Radiation Oncology Consultations, Ltd. (ROCL), and ProCure Treatment Centers, Inc. and will be located in Warrenville’s Cantera development. Plans for a fall groundbreaking are under way.
